OKB OKB
OKX's membership token, slowly burned down to a hard cap of 21 million
๐ญ A card-shaped spirit from the OKX exchange; the more its kin get burned, the rarer it becomes
๐ฌ โShow me at the OKX counter and your trading fee shrinks. Here's the odd thing about me though: whenever some of my kind get tossed in the fire, the rest of us get a little rarer. There won't ever be more than 21 million of us. ๐ฅโ
- OKB is the in-house token of the OKX exchange. It gets you fee discounts and launchpad access, much like Binance's BNB.
- OKX spends a chunk of its revenue to buy OKB and burn it, so the count keeps falling.
- In August 2025 a single giant burn locked the maximum supply at 21 million, the same hard cap Bitcoin has.
๐ The Story
Let's keep this one simple, because OKB itself is pretty simple. The crypto exchange OKX launched it in March 2018 as a kind of house token. Hold some, trade on OKX, and your trading fees come out cheaper; you also get a foot in the door for new token sales the exchange runs. Think of it as a membership card you can also own a piece of.
What makes OKB interesting is what OKX does to it. Since May 2019, the exchange has spent part of its fee income to buy OKB off the market and burn it, destroy it for good. Fewer tokens, the same demand, so each surviving OKB carries a bit more weight. People had been watching that slow drip for years.
Then came the big one. On 13 August 2025, OKX torched 65.26 million OKB in a single move and announced the supply would never climb above 21 million, the exact same ceiling as Bitcoin. The price roughly tripled in the days that followed. ๐ฅ

๐งฉ How it works
The way OKB grows scarce is surprisingly simple. OKX takes part of the fee revenue it earns when people trade and uses it to buy OKB off the market. Then it burns the OKB it bought, so it can never be used again. As the count drops, every remaining OKB has fewer seats at the table and becomes more precious. Since no new ones are minted (there's no fresh issuance), the total only ever shrinks over time, a 'deflationary' token.
๐ Light & Shadow
- It does real jobs inside OKX: cheaper trading fees and early access to launchpad sales
- The supply only shrinks. Regular burns thin the count, and since 2025 it can never top 21 million
- From 2024 it doubles as the gas token of OKX's own L2, X Layer, so it has a use beyond the exchange counter
- Almost everything rides on one company. If OKX runs into trouble, OKB feels it directly
- One announcement can move the price hard. After the 2025 burn it jumped more than 200% in days, which cuts both ways
- OKX sets the rules on minting and burning, so holding OKB means trusting the operator rather than a coin that runs on its own
๐งฌ Evolution Tree
OKB isn't a hard fork of another coin, the exchange issued it from scratch. Instead, it's a 'sibling' of Binance's BNB: both belong to the same 'exchange utility token' species and follow the same design pattern of fee discounts + buyback-and-burn (deflation) + becoming the gas token of their own chain/L2. OKB's 2025 burn strategy openly took its cue from BNB's quarterly burns.

โ FAQ
- What is OKB?
- It's an 'exchange utility token' created by the major crypto exchange OKX (formerly OKEx). You use it to get exchange perks like trading-fee discounts and access to new token sales (launchpads). It plays the same role as Binance's BNB.
- What does 'burning' mean?
- Burning means destroying tokens so they can never be used again. Since May 2019, OKX has used part of its trading-fee revenue to buy back OKB and burn it. As the count goes down, each remaining token becomes scarcer, this is called a 'deflationary' model.
- Why was the supply set to 21 million?
- On August 13, 2025, OKX burned about 65.26 million OKB in one go (worth roughly $7.6 billion at the time), cutting the circulating supply by about 52%. It permanently capped the maximum supply at 21 million, the exact same hard cap as Bitcoin. The price more than tripled in the short term right after the announcement.
- Where can I buy OKB?
- Mainly on OKX and other global crypto exchanges. Because an exchange token's value is tied closely to that one exchange's business and policies, understand the risks well and only try a small amount. (This is general information, not a recommendation of any exchange or investment.)
