📖 The Story
November 2021. A small team set out to fix a problem that sits under almost every privacy headache: to use data, you usually have to decrypt it first, and the moment you decrypt it, someone could peek. Nillion's bet was that you should never have to make that trade. They bootstrapped the company past forty people before taking a cent of outside money.
December 2022. The market was in ruins, FTX had just collapsed, and most founders couldn't raise a dollar. Nillion closed a seed round of more than $20 million anyway, reportedly without even a pitch deck. The founders carried serious resumes, a founding engineer from Uber and the founder of Indiegogo among them, which helped investors take the strange idea seriously.
March 24, 2025. The network went live and the NIL token was born, listing the same day on exchanges like Binance, Kraken, and Bithumb. The pitch had a name now: humanity's first blind computer, a machine that computes on data it is not allowed to read.
2026. Nillion changed its home address. It opened a 1-to-1 bridge and moved NIL off its own Cosmos chain onto Ethereum as an ERC-20 token; the old chain, nilChain, shut down on March 23, 2026. The oracle kept its blindfold. It just moved to a busier street.

Imagine you want a friend to add up your bank balances, but you don't want them to know any single number. You could tear each number into random pieces, hand a different pile to several friends, and have them add their piles separately. None of them sees a real figure, yet their totals combine into the right answer. That shard-and-share idea is Multi-Party Computation, the heart of Nillion. The second tool, homomorphic encryption, goes further, it does math directly on locked boxes without unlocking them.
Around that core sit three layers. Petnet is where the blind compute actually runs. nilChain was the coordinator that handled staking, rewards, and governance. A connectivity layer wires them together. The NIL token pays the fees for every blind computation.
