NEAR Protocol NEAR
The friendly worker who splits into copies to carry the load all at once
๐ญ When the line gets long, it splits its body so several copies can work the counters at once. It also hands you a tidy name tag (.near). A warm, helpful guide.
๐ฌ โHi! Lots of people lining up today? Give me a second. I'll make a couple of copies of myself so we can take everyone at once. And here, a name tag for you: โalice.near.โ Much friendlier than a wall of random letters, right? โจโ
- A smart-contract blockchain made to run apps fast and cheap.
- It copies itself into pieces that run all at the same time (that's โshardingโ), so it doesn't jam up.
- You can use a readable name like alice.near instead of a long address.
๐ The Story
The simplest way to picture NEAR is a helper standing at a counter. If one helper takes everyone one by one, the line backs up. NEAR's trick is that it can split into copies of itself and open several counters at once. Behind the scenes that's a bunch of parallel pieces called shards; from where you stand it still feels like one tidy line that moves quickly. NEAR calls the whole setup โNightshade sharding,โ and after a 2024 upgrade the helper got noticeably quicker, blocks land in roughly 600 milliseconds.
It's also a friendly helper. Most wallets hand you a long scramble of letters and numbers; NEAR lets you carry a plain name tag like alice.near instead. That small touch fits who built it. Co-founder Illia Polosukhin was a Google researcher who helped write the 2017 โTransformerโ paper that kicked off today's AI boom, and NEAR has leaned hard into AI agents ever since. The network itself went fully live on 22 April 2020 and is kept honest by Proof of Stake.
๐ Stats
๐งฉ How it works
When all the work piles onto one worker, the line gets long. NEAR splits the work into pieces (shards) and handles them at the same time. So even when transactions flood in, it stays smooth and fast (blocks ~600ms, finality ~1.2s). The network is kept safe with Proof of Stake (PoS), people who lock up (stake) their NEAR take turns verifying the work and earning rewards.
๐ Light & Shadow
- Stays fast and cheap even when traffic spikes, because sharding spreads the load (blocks ~600ms, finality ~1.2s)
- Readable names like alice.near make it gentler for first-timers than most chains
- A co-founder helped invent the AI tech behind ChatGPT, and NEAR now bets heavily on AI agents
- Fresh NEAR is minted every year, so there's no supply cap (unlike Bitcoin's fixed 21 million. An October 2025 vote did cut inflation from 5% to about 2.5%, and busy days can burn some back through fees)
- The fast-L1 lane is crowded. NEAR competes for the same users as Solana and Avalanche, and standing out is hard
- Risk is real: a NEAR app called Skyward Finance lost about $3 million in a 2022 hack, and the price can lurch in a single day
๐งญ Meet other friends
NEAR isn't a fork of another coin, it's an independently designed L1, built from scratch. So it's fun to compare it with the other fast smart-contract friends of its โsame generation / rival group.โ
โ FAQ
- What is NEAR Protocol (NEAR)?
- It's a smart-contract blockchain built to run apps (dApps) fast and cheap. Thanks to โNightshade shardingโ, which splits the network into pieces (shards) that process at the same time, it stays smooth even when lots of transactions show up at once.
- What is โshardingโ?
- If one worker handles everything, the line gets long. So NEAR splits the work into pieces (shards) and handles them in parallel, like splitting your body into copies to carry the load together. That keeps things fast and the fees low.
- What's a name like alice.near?
- Most crypto wallet addresses are long, messy strings of letters and numbers. NEAR lets you use a friendly name tag like alice.near that's easy to read and remember, so newcomers get less confused.
- Where can I buy NEAR?
- On most major crypto exchanges, such as Coinbase, Kraken, or Binance. It moves a lot, so only try a small amount. (This is general information, not advice or a recommendation to use any particular exchange.)
