Tokenized gold — crypto tokens that each stand for a slice of real, vaulted gold — quietly passed a stress test this year, holding up during one of the sharpest gold sell-offs in decades. Yet according to a new report from data firm RedStone, less than 2% of it is actually being put to work inside crypto's lending markets.

Tokens like Tether Gold (XAUT) and PAX Gold (PAXG) are designed to track the price of physical gold, with real bullion held in a vault behind them. They let someone hold gold exposure on a blockchain, move it around instantly, and — in theory — use it the way crypto is used: as collateral to borrow against.

That "borrow against it" part got tested on March 23, when gold fell about 10% in a single week, its worst stretch in more than four decades, which one JPMorgan strategist called an "extremely brutal flush." The lending app Aave processed its largest-ever batch of tokenized-gold liquidations without breaking, showing the machinery holds up even when prices swing hard. A liquidation is when a loan's collateral is automatically sold off because its value has dropped too far to safely back the loan.

Despite passing that test, only about $63 million of tokenized gold is being used as collateral on the main lending apps — just 1.5% of the roughly $4.2 billion worth of these tokens that exist. Trading volume, by contrast, hit $90.7 billion in the first quarter. In other words, people are trading tokenized gold far more than they are actually using it inside crypto's financial plumbing.

Tokenized gold is one slice of a much broader trend called real-world assets, or RWAs — putting things like bonds, funds and commodities onto blockchains, a market that topped $43 billion in June. For a beginner, it is a useful example of both the promise and the reality: the technology can work under real pressure, but a product that works and a product that people actually use are still two different things. And remember that a gold token is only as trustworthy as the vault and the auditor standing behind it — worth checking before you assume "backed by gold" means fully backed.
