A Bitcoin wallet that had sat untouched since January 2014 suddenly moved its entire balance of 26.96 BTC, worth about $1.75 million, on Aug. 10 — and because every Bitcoin transaction is public, researchers spotted the move within minutes.

The coins first arrived when Bitcoin traded well under $1,000, at an average cost of roughly $803 each, so the transfer sits on a potential gain of about $1.73 million, or nearly 8,000%. Galaxy Research, which flagged the move, was careful to note that shifting coins is not the same as selling them — but sweeping a long-dormant balance to a fresh address often comes before the coins are consolidated or moved toward a place where they could be sold or posted as collateral.

It was not a one-off. Just last week, a wallet that had held 49.97 BTC since 2011 — bought near $10 a coin — moved after 14 years, with the funds landing in a wallet labeled as belonging to broker FalconX.

These awakenings fit a longer pattern. In a single January 2024 session, wallets dormant since 2013 moved around $2 billion, and another holder relocated 3,000 BTC after a decade of silence. Each reappearance shows supply that many observers had assumed was lost for good quietly coming back to life.

For a beginner, there are two lessons here. First, Bitcoin's ledger is completely open, so anyone can watch a wallet move funds in real time — on-chain privacy is far more limited than people expect. Second, these old coins are a reminder of both sides of holding: the outsized reward for those who kept their keys, and the permanent loss for those who did not. This is information, not advice.
