In March 2023, a small team led by Ethan Sun, with co-founders Rick Lin and Charles Z Qin, started MyShell with a simple complaint: the best AI tools all lived behind the doors of a few big companies. You could use them, but you couldn't really own anything you made. They wanted the opposite, a place where an ordinary person could put together their own AI agent the way you'd assemble a toy, and then keep it.
The pitch is the hermit crab's trick. A hermit crab doesn't grow its own shell, it finds an empty one and moves in. MyShell hands out the empty shells, the tools to build a chatbot or a voice assistant, and lets each person move their own creation inside. By the project's own count it grew to hundreds of thousands of creators and millions of users, though those are marketing figures, not numbers we can independently check.
The token came later than the platform. The SHELL token generation event wrapped up on 13 February 2025, and on 27 February 2025 Binance listed it. That same day SHELL touched its all-time high of $0.6834, then settled, the way most freshly listed tokens do once the opening rush fades.
Along the way it raised about $16.6 million from backers including Dragonfly, INCE Capital, and YZi Labs, the group formerly known as Binance Labs. Money buys runway, not a finished product, and MyShell is still very much a young one.
