Axie Infinity AXS
the monster-tamer's coin, breed pets, battle, then guard the bridge
๐ญ a pocket monster you breed and battle, with a $600M scar where its bridge once broke
๐ฌ โI am a game you can hold. Players hatch me, raise me, and send me into battle, and for a while half a country played for a living. Then thieves walked through my bridge and took about $600 million. I rebuilt the door.โ
- The game: collect, breed, and battle cartoon pets called Axies. Each one is an NFT you own.
- The token: AXS is the game's governance + staking coin, capped at 270 million. Its sibling SLP is the in-game reward.
- 2021: a "play-to-earn" boom; players in the Philippines and Vietnam earned real money playing.
- 2022: its Ronin bridge was hacked for about $600 million, one of crypto's biggest thefts ever.
๐ The Story
2018. A small studio in Vietnam called Sky Mavis launched a strange little game. Instead of buying characters from a company that owned them, you owned them yourself, each fighting pet was an NFT living on a blockchain. The pets were called Axies, and you could collect, breed, and battle them like a hand of trading cards that fought back.
2021. The idea caught fire. The game paid players in crypto for winning and breeding, and in places where wages were low, that math changed lives. In the Philippines and Vietnam, thousands of people played Axie Infinity as a daily income during the pandemic. People called it "play-to-earn", and for a season it looked like the future of games. Critics warned the model leaned on new players paying in to reward the old ones, and that it could not last forever.
March 2022. Then came the night the bridge broke. Axie's world runs on Ronin, a fast chain Sky Mavis built itself, and a bridge let money cross between Ronin and Ethereum. That bridge was guarded by nine keys, and a deal needed five of them to agree. Attackers quietly got hold of five. With the door unlocked, they walked off with about $600 million in crypto, one of the largest heists the industry had ever seen. The theft happened on March 23 and was not even noticed until almost a week later. The U.S. FBI later blamed a hacking group tied to North Korea.
The pet that started as a cute experiment had become a cautionary tale and a survivor at the same time. Sky Mavis repaid users, rebuilt the bridge with far more keys, and kept the game running. Axie still hatches, still battles, and still remembers the night the door was left open.
๐ Stats
๐งฉ How it works
Axie Infinity uses two tokens that do different jobs. SLP (Smooth Love Potion) is the reward you earn from playing and spend to breed new Axies, so a lot of it is minted and burned all the time. AXS is the rarer one: it is the governance and staking token, capped at 270 million, and holders can lock it up and vote on the game's future. The whole thing runs on Ronin, a chain Sky Mavis built for speed and low fees, with a bridge linking it back to Ethereum.
๐ Light & Shadow
- One of the first tokens tied to a real, working game that millions of people actually played
- Players truly own their Axies as NFTs and can sell or trade them, not just rent them from a company
- AXS is capped at 270 million, and Sky Mavis kept building after the hack, repaying users and shipping new titles (Origins, Homeland)
- The $600M Ronin bridge hack in 2022 is a permanent scar and a warning about how fragile crypto bridges can be
- The "play-to-earn" boom cooled fast, the reward token SLP crashed over 99% from its peak as new players dried up
- AXS lives or dies by how popular one game is, if players leave, there is little else holding up the price
๐งฌ Evolution lineage
Not a fork of anything. AXS is an Ethereum-born token that grew its own chain (Ronin). It is the governance half of a token pair: AXS for steering, SLP for in-game rewards, both riding Ronin's RON gas.
